Goldschmidt MLB Debut and 1st Career HR Tickets

Since I started a blog about Paul Goldschmidt I figured I should try and pick up some more Goldschmidt items for my collection. I decided to try to find a ticket from his MLB debut and found one on eBay for $2.50. His debut was on August 1, 2011 against the Giants in San Francisco. The same seller also had a ticket from the August 2, 2011 game where Goldy hit his first career home run, so I picked that up as well for $2.50. With combined shipping I spent under $8 for the two tickets which I hope to get signed sometime soon.

If Goldschmidt were an animal, what animal would he be?

During the All-Star break, Paul Goldschmidt was asked what animal he would like to be. His answer...a gorilla. You can see the video clip here. If you just want to see Goldschmidt then skip to 2:01. Not a bad answer Mr. Goldschmidt, although a baseball playing gorilla apparently is not a new idea. Sorry Goldy! Watch the trailer for a Korean movie called Mr. Go.

Leading the team in...everything!

If you go to the Arizona Diamondbacks web site and scroll down to the middle of the page on the right hand side you'll see a spot for team batting leaders that has tabs for batting average, runs, home runs, RBI, and stolen bases. Guess who leads the D-Backs in every one of those categories right now. Yep, it's Goldy! He leads the Diamondbacks with a .313 average, 60 runs, 21 home runs, 77 RBI, and 9 stolen bases.

Patrick Corbin and Paul Goldschmidt at the All-Star Game

Goldschmidt is finally getting some national attention! Sort of?

Paul Goldschmidt currently leads all first baseman in WAR this season with a WAR of 4.8 and has the 7th highest WAR in all of baseball right now. WAR stands for Wins Above Replacement, meaning how many wins a certain player would give a team compared to a replacement player, which would be a bench player or minor leaguer. For position players batting, fielding and baserunning statistics to determine their WAR.

Goldschmidt, or Goldy as he is commonly referred to, is starting to gather some national attention, but still has a ways to go. Consider this article on bleacherreport.com which is titled, MLB All Star Roster 2013: Top MVP Sleepers to Watch in Midsummer Classic, by Mike Chiari, in which Goldschmidt is the first player that they discuss. That's great, right? Except that they refer to him as "Goldie" in the article and not Goldy.

"According to ESPN Stats & Info, Goldie is among the elite first basemen in the game this year."

Don't worry. I messaged Mike Chiari on Twitter and advised him of his error. You can do the same @MikeChiari.

Oh well, I guess it's better than no recognition at all!

2013 MLB All-Star Game Performance

Goldschmidt came into the All-Star game in the 5th inning to replace Joey Votto. In the 6th inning he made a nice catch in foul territory to get Miguel Cabrera out.

When he came to bat in the 7th, Goldschmidt hit a bouncing ball right down the third baseline. Manny Macado made a spectacular play and was able to get Goldy out by half step. No other third baseman would have been able to make that play. You can see the play here: http://wapc.mlb.com/play?content_id=28928465

Goldschmidt came to the plate one more time in the bottom of the 9th with two outs and hit a opposite field double to keep the National Leagues hopes alive. This was just the 3rd hit that the National League had all night and the only extra base hit. You can see it here: http://mlb.mlb.com/news/article.jsp?ymd=20130716&content_id=53890014&vkey=news_mlb&c_id=mlb

Here are a couple of quotes from Goldy about his All-Star experience.

"It was awesome. Hopefully as many people as possible get to do it. Hopefully I'll get to do it again. Obviously it's an honor to be out here with some of these guys, mentioned in the same breath as them. That in itself was cool, but just the whole experience of being here, everything they did was top notch."

"I got to talk to guys I normally wouldn't talk to. That was probably my favorite part of the experience, to talk to guys and get their take on things."
